The New Majority

We all knew it was going to happen. It was just a matter of when.

More than 50 percent of the nation’s population younger than age 1 are people of color, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. By 2042, demographers have estimated, people of color will be in the majority. By 2050, that number is expected to be 54 percent. Meanwhile, some demographers are now saying it will happen before 2040.

We don’t know yet what this means. A nation so grounded in race may not know what to do or how to act. There will be problems, hiccups, and throwbacks as we try to figure it out. We are already stumbling over what we should call ourselves. It’s the only way we know how to move forward.

It won’t be Utopia. But, with any luck, the nation will begin leaving racism, discrimination, et al in the rearview mirror, and Simone, Nadia, and the rest of the generation will not experience the segregation their grandparents and ancestors witnessed.
