Good Read

The Census Bureau has requested a change in how it gathers statistics about race. A few of the proposed changes: The term “Negro” would be deleted, leaving “black” or “African-American.” Hispanics would receive a separate category from blacks and whites, and there would be write-in spaces for Middle Easterners and Arabs.

It’s not clear what this means. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some unintended consequences that may not reveal themselves until data are collected. For now, I’m putting this issue in the “to-watch” bin.

My thoughts:Not all American blacks are African-Americans; Hispanic is not a race but an ethnicity; why isn’t there a category for Middle Eastern/North  African or South Asian
