Princess Tiana

Before I start, I should say we will see The Princess and the Frog. I have already made it clear I am no fan of princesses. Still, I am curious about the movie featuring Disney’s first black princess, and Simone and Nadia have asked to see it. One movie can’t hurt them, right? I would like to think so, but a study conducted by researchers at the University of Central Florida, which sits in Walt Disney World’s backyard, shows girls older than Simone and Nadia often define themselves based on what they see in the media. I am betting my girls will not notice Princess Tiana’s thin frame. If they do, we will have a frank discussion about it.

Great article at The Root. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts after seeing this movie.
The princess fascination recently came home from school with my girls. My husband asked them if they wanted to see a real princess and they eagerly agreed. So he showed them some delightful photos of Princess Anne. He explained that real princesses are just normal looking people who wear business suits and raise money for charity. It dampened their princess enthusiasm for a little while.
I have nothing against a dose of pure fantasy and entertainment, but the princess culture does bother me, especially when it isn’t outgrown. There is now a Disney bridal collection. As their website explains, it “creates a look that connects to every girl’s inner princess.” Heavy sigh.

I completely agree with you about the mixed messages that princesses send to little girls. I think I’d rather raise my daughters with images of strong girls. Did you ever read The Woman Warrior? That’s the type of character I’d like to teach little girls to idolize.
