I tell all of my new parent friends to get a cloth diaper service. Even if you don't use the cloth diapers on the actual baby's behind, they make great clean-up wipes and the service is super convenient. Or, barring that, go to Target and buy a couple dozen gauze cotton diapers. Keep one or two draped over your shoulder at all times. Remember, babies produce lots of bodily fluids, but everything they produce is water soluble.

Aside from the infancy stuff, I remind people to cherish every moment. It goes fast. Before you know it you'll turn around and they're taller than you, highly accomplished, wholly formed. Then they're gone into the world.

Seriously, where all the baby codes are hidden? I need them, stat! I love this and it's refreshing to hear. We are getting soo many opinions about parenting. It's overwhelming!

Yes, totally agree...she is what she is...and why not embrace it. I am caucasian and my husband African-American. My daughter looks mixed but definitely looks...African-American (although some assume Puerto-Rican or other ethnicities). Do I want her to announce her mom is cream (as she sees me) no...but I don't want her to forget that although she looks more like Daddy...I am in her too. With so many more mixed marriages of all different races -- this will be more and more common place -- what's Beyonce's doing/claiming and I am all for it. I have to say we do make more of this when it's a black/brown/white thing. About half of my couple friends are in mixed marriages but not...black/white. 2 of my closest friends are Phillipino and their kids whose dads are white...just say they are Phillipino and Irish (or whatever) when in these cases they definitely look dominantly Phillipino and no one blinks an eye. Another friend's kids are indian and irish...There's sensitivity when talking about race but not about what their kids 'are' like there seems to be much more of when again, it's a black/white issue of mixed heritage.

I see nothing wrong with Beyonce putting her heritage out there. All three of those races are who she is. I'm sure she knows that the majority of people will see her as black. I've heard her say that she is a black woman. Why should she deny her heritage. People need to get over themselves & simply worry about themselves.
I often check all the other races on forms just because I can. I know I'm black for the most part but I have mixed raced grandparents on both sides. It's who I am. If people want to say I'm not black enough or selling out, that's their problem.
Also if Beyonce didn't not approve the commercial, I'm sure it would have never aired.

"But the larger questions remain about why any of this matters so much outside of the medical context (where certain genetic markers may affect compatibility of treatments)."

I am still annoyed that we could not get our wedding license without answering this question. Had I to do over, I would put "human" in the space and leave it at that. I had to answer the question to take Portuguese at the adult ed program through Miami public schools. Really? My race is relevant for this?

For the US census, I didn't answer the question. The census people called me four times! I refused to answer each time. None of their business.

I like your article. I also like what you say about what we all might find looking at our distant family tree. I am a pale blond of primarily Irish, English and Swedish descent but when I was digging into my geneology about six months before my now 4.5 year old daughter who is bi-racial was born I found that my great, great grandmother from New York was listed on census records as mullatto. For an instant this discovery was shocking (not in a bad way). However, it made sense as my my maternal grandmother had light brown skin that through family lore we attributed it to some likely mysterious native american. Point being illustrates what you mention -- who knows -- what anyone's background is. In the reverse, my husband who is African-American just two generations back had a great grandfather from Germany who basically lived in an African-American enclave not understanding America's racial issues and apparently not understanding at least immediately why his living among African-Americans was strange and in the south at the time dangerous. What box am I to fill out from our daughter? I try to check-off as many as appropriate and hope more flexibility in this arena because I think many others have the 'surprise' relatives in their background that both my husband and I have...:-)

I did read this book and considered it for my 3 year old granddaughter; the pictures were so colorful and lovely; it had a great theme and wise lesson overall. However, I couldn't bring myself to buy it for my little one. She is 3 and the first part of the story is so negative. I don't think she has ever seen herself as ugly at all or different (in a bad way). She likes her nose, her cinnamon skin, her full heart-shaped lips and her fuzzy hair. She does pageants and thinks she is awesome (she's won several), beautiful, and sassy; so I was wasn't sure that I wanted to put a negative idea in her head. Our family is chock full of all races; racial mixtures and cultures and she hasn't had this happen to her in our suburban neighborhood.

Now, I am not blind, nor naive: I am a Psychologist and I know this happens (although I honestly think less so these days with very young ones); but wasn't sure a 3 year old should be exposed if she hasn't had this thrown at her yet. I don't think our family is that different from others. In fact my bi-racial (half Asian) nephew has very full lips (got them from my brother); and people NEVER stop telling him how gorgeous he is with those full lips! Maybe I am over-thinking it. I did buy this type of book for my very "chocolate" long, wavy-haired daughter when she was young (because she was always being asked where her hair came from); but not so sure this is the book for our kids now. Or maybe 3 is just too young...I was just not convinced this would be good for her. I don't know how others feel; who have read it (?)
