First-Grade Readiness in 1979

Check out this school readiness list published in 1979.

Ten affirmative answers out of 12 mean your child is ready for the first grade.

1. Will your child be six years, six months or older when she begins first grade and starts receiving reading instruction? Yes!  She’s been reading since she was four.

2. Does your child have two to five permanent or second teeth? Yes, but they are a bit crooked at the moment.

3. Can your child tell, in such a way that her speech is understood by a school crossing guard or policeman, where she lives? Simone can tell you anything you want to know about where she lives and a whole bunch of things you hadn’t planned for.

4. Can she draw and color and stay within the lines of the design being colored? Yes, but why must she color inside the lines?

5. Can she stand on one foot with eyes closed for five to ten seconds? I think so. Let me get back to you on this one.

6. Can she ride a small two-wheeled bicycle without helper wheels? Not yet. Maybe when it cools down a bit outside.

7. Can she tell her left hand from right? Yes. She makes the biggest messes when she uses both of her hands.

8. Can she travel alone in the neighborhood (four to eight blocks) to the store, school, playground, or to a friend’s home? I don’t know. I never let her do that. Are you crazy?

9. Can she be away from you all day without being upset? She prefers to be with children so that she can boss them around just like her Mommy does at home.

10. Can she repeat an eight- to ten-word sentence, if you say it once, as “The boy ran all the way home from the store”? Yes, she can repeat the sentence. Whether she is listening so that she can hear the sentence is another matter entirely.

11. Can she count eight to ten pennies correctly? Not only can she count pennies, but nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars. She is also quite good at spending all forms of money.

12. Does your child try to write or copy letters or numbers? Yes, she writes notes and tapes them to doors around our home when she doesn’t like something we say.
