Routine Change

coconut oil

We have added coconut oil to our daily hair routine. It is a light oil, gives a lot of shine, and tames the frizzies. It is also less expensive than Hair Milk and can be used by the girls and me. Nadia (pictured above) has very fine hair, and this oil is light enough to use every few days or so. I apply it to Simone’s hair daily, and it helps keep her hair smooth and tangle free. As for me, I use it to seal my hair after I moisturize it with a conditioner.

Coconut oil may be purchased at many natural food stores. Our coconut oil is infused with Ayurvedic herbs, and I buy it at a local Indian store for about $6.  If you go to your local Indian store, be sure to read the label and buy the pure coconut oil, not mineral oil. The latter just sits on the hair, while coconut oil is easily absorbed into the hair.  Check it out and tell me what you think.

  • Hm. The shea butter was giving me fits, too, so I think I’ll go check out the coconut oil.

  • Coconut oil is the best! I’m using it head to toe on myself and my girls. It’s so much more easier to work with now that I stopped following the directions to keep it refrigerated. It just lives with the lotions and hair products and scoops out like a dream.

  • Nadia’s hair is gorgeous! I am curious about the coconut oil. I use organic vigin coconut oil for cooking. It is thick, white, and turns clear when heated. Is this the consistency of the oil you use? I think if I rub it around on my hands it will soften up. Do you wet the hair first?

    • Donna,

It’s the same oil. I put just a little bit in my hands, rub it once or twice to melt it a bit and then put in on the hair. I wet a brush with a little water to help smooth the hair, but it’s not necessary. It’s natural and it smells great. If you want to know a little more, I’d suggest going to naturallycurly.com and searching coconut oil. A lot of women also use castor oil. I used to use shea butter, but it is heavy and has a little natural latex in it. My hair touches my face and I got a horrible case of adult acne. It took me a while to figure it out, but I finally stopped using it.

  • Omigosh I would cut off my little finger to have hair like that.
